Consider the following ways you can help make a difference in someone's life:
- Literacy Tutors meet one-on-one or with a small group to help adult students to improve their reading, writing and spelling skills.
- English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutors work with a small group of students on speaking, understanding, and writing English.
- NEW: Reading Coaches volunteer for as little as two hours a month in a community literacy lab to help adults with basic correspondence, deal with bills, and assist adults in other basic reading and writing tasks. (more information below).
- Student Interviewers make the first contact with potential students and administer assessments to determine the reading and speaking level of students.
- Computer Lab Consultants help students and their tutors use reading, writing and English instructional software tools in our computer lab.
- Additional Volunteer Opportunities exist such as office helpers, board membership, serving on a committee, or helping with fairs and events.
- Indy Reads Contributors make financial donations that helps Indy reads continue to provide free adult literacy services. Donate today!
Indy Reads asks volunteers, especially tutors, to make a one-year commitment to the program. Tutors and students usually meet twice a week for 1-1/2 hours; tutoring schedules are based on times and days most convienient for both. Tutoring takes place at the Indy Reads offices, at Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library branches or other public places including churches and community centers.

This role may be perfect for you if
· you are interested in literacy tutoring, but cannot offer the 3 hours per week that is requested for one-on-one tutoring
· you have taken the literacy tutor training, and are waiting to be matched with a student
· you have been a literacy tutor before, but are no longer meeting with your student and would like to become involved with Indy Reads again -
New Volunteer Opportunity: Starting at the end of September, we hope to be able to implement our newest resource to prospective students at two locations in Indianapolis—Barton Towers and Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center. We are looking for Volunteer Reading Coaches to be available at these locations for a block of time when individuals can come and receive extra instruction with reading and writing tasks.

Responsibilities: Reading coaches will help prospective students fill out job applications, respond to letters, understand their pay checks, etc. on a case-by-case basis. They will also inform prospective students of the other services available through Indy Reads and direct them to resources if needed.

Requirements: We would like for all of the reading coaches to complete the Indy Reads literacy tutor training and feel comfortable talking with prospective students. As a reading coach, you will be asked to volunteer for approximately 2 hours a week every other week.
Interested volunteers - for all opportunities - are invited to attend one of our monthly orientations to learn more about Indy Reads and the volunteer opportunities available.
